The Belgian government is very strict when it comes to gambling. This becomes clear when you take a look at the rules Belgian gamblers have to deal with. For example, persons under the age of 21 years don’t have access to virtual casinos and slot machine halls. What are the other rules when it comes to gambling in Belgium?
No access under 21
You can find a lot of casinos and gambling halls in Belgium, but it’s not always easy to get access. The Belgian government finds the protection of young gamblers very important, and this is why no one under the age of 21 can enter a land-based or online casino. With land-based and virtual betting offices the minimum age is 18.
A way to protect vulnerable players
One of the reasons to exclude young people is that they’re more vulnerable. Research has shown that they can easily become addicted to gambling, if you compare it older gamblers. When a player needs to protected against him- or herself, the access (online) casino or a (virtual) betting office can be denied. This often happens when a third party, such as the partner, can as for an exclusion at the Gambling Commission.
Preventive restriction and the law
The exclusion of a person, who can be suspected of being addicted to gambling, is often part of a legal decision, with the help of the Gambling Commission. It’s also possible to ask for a preventive restriction on games of chance for a person who needs to protected. If a person finds this necessary, he or she has to write a letter to the Gambling Commission. The Commission takes a look at the case first, and then takes a decision.
Restriction for certain professions
Interesting to know is that some professions can also lead to an exclusion of casinos or gaming halls in Belgium. For example, police members, magistrates, notaries and bailiffs cannot enter these places. Even if they do like to enter the case, there’s no chance. Belgian casinos use the so called ‘Excluded Persons Information System’, known as EPIS. This is an electronic system with the names of excluded persons. When someone enters a casino, gaming hall or betting office, whether it’s land-based or online, his or her name and date of birth are checked. When it appears that this person is registered in EPIS, the access to the casino is denied. Over the years the system has shown to be a good instrument in the fight against gambling addiction.
