Important things to know about the Belgian gambling tax ! Online gambling in Belgium has been legalized for a while now. It means that players are allowed to take a gamble in a land-based or online casino. However, in Belgium you’re required to pay a gambling tax. A number of games are excluded for this, but not all of them. There’s no gambling tax for Belgian lottery players, but they do have to pay a tax over their winnings in an online casino. The gambling tax in Belgium is set at 11 percent.
Do you have to pay a gambling tax yourself?
Imagine that you win 500 or 1000 euros in a casino, whether you play online or visit one in the city. It’s a great amount, but ask yourself the following question: how much money did you spend to win that 500 or 1000 euros? Even if you spend 250 or 500 euros, you still have a profit of 50 percent. You only have to pay a gambling tax on this amount. The (online) casino must pay this amount of money for you to the tax authorities. So you don’t have to pay the tax yourself, nor fill in a tax return. The payment of the gambling tax takes place when you pay money during a casino game.
What about professional Belgium gamblers?
You don’t have to do anything yourself because the gambling tax has already been paid by the casino. So you can keep your profit. There is an exception for professional gamblers though. These people are required to pay an income tax on their profit. Imagine that you’re a professional full-time Poker player who earns income with this game. In that case you do have to pay taxes. When you complete a tax return, you must indicate that you’ve won a certain amount of money in the casino. By doing so, you won’t get problems when it turns out that afterwards you had to pay income tax.
